What kinds of walking holiday do you offer?

All of them are on foot, in Portugal, on trails we walk ourselves.

Guided or self-guided: what is the difference?

On a self-guided walk you go at your own pace and on your own schedule, using our digital guidebook and GPS tracks to find your way. We handle the logistics behind the scenes: accommodation, daily luggage transfers, transfers between stages, and a 24-hour support line if you need it. On a guided walk, a local guide walks with you throughout, leads the navigation, and shares the history, nature and stories along the way. Self-guided suits independent walkers who like their freedom; guided suits those who want the company and the local knowledge. Both are fully supported.

What does a typical day on a self-guided walk look like?

Breakfast at your accommodation, then you leave your main bag for the transfer (usually by a set time in the morning). You walk the day's stage using the guidebook and GPS, stopping wherever you like. When you reach the next village, your luggage is already there waiting. The afternoon and evening are yours. If anything comes up on the trail, the 24-hour line is there.

How big are your groups?

Guided walks are capped at twelve people. If a group is larger, we split it and add a second guide, so the pace and the dinner table stay personal. Self-guided walks are usually individuals, couples or small groups of friends walking on their own.

Can you create a tailor-made itinerary?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and many of our trips are built from scratch. We can shape the route, the dates, the number of walking days, where you start and finish, and any rest or activity days in between, around you. Tell us what you have in mind and we will plan it.

Which trails and regions do you cover?

We stay in Portugal and know it well: the Rota Vicentina (both the coastal Fishermen's Trail and the inland Historical Way), the Via Algarviana across the Algarve's interior, the Algarve and Alentejo coasts, and the West Coast between Óbidos and Lisbon.

Are you a licensed, registered operator?

Yes. Farol Discover is a registered Portuguese travel agency (RNAVT 10982) and a registered tourism-activities operator (RNAAT 148/2024), and we are registered with Visit Algarve and Visit Alentejo. We are also an official partner of the Rota Vicentina and the Via Algarviana.

How fit do I need to be, and how are the walks graded?

You need to be comfortable walking for several hours over consecutive days, on natural trails that can include sand, hills and uneven ground. We grade each trip as easy, moderate or challenging, and every itinerary lists the distances and terrain so you can judge it honestly. If you are not sure which level fits you, tell us how you usually walk and we will point you to the right trip.

How far will I walk each day?

It depends on the trail and the grade, and most stages sit within a comfortable day's walk with time to stop and enjoy it. Every itinerary gives the exact distance and terrain for each stage, so you can see what each day involves before you book. On tailor-made trips we can shorten or split stages to suit you.

Is there an age limit?

There is no upper age limit. What matters is your fitness and health, not your age. Many of our walkers are in their fifties, sixties and beyond. Choose a grade that suits how you walk and you will be in good company.

Can I travel on my own?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and many people do. On a self-guided walk you have the freedom of the trail to yourself, with our support behind you. On a guided walk you join a small group, so there is company when you want it. If you would like a room to yourself, a single supplement applies (see Booking and payment).

Can you cater for dietary needs?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Let us know any dietary requirements or allergies when you book, and we will pass them on to your accommodations and to any restaurants we arrange. Breakfast is included every day; for other meals we will make sure there are good options for you.

What languages do you guide in?

Accepted Answer

Our guided walks are led in English and German. Our team also speaks Portuguese, and we are happy to correspond in any of the three before and during your trip.

Will I have to carry my own luggage?

Accepted Answer

No. We transfer your main luggage between accommodations every day, so you walk with just a daypack for water, snacks, layers and a camera. You leave your bag at your accommodation in the morning and it is waiting for you at the next one.

Are the trails well marked, and do you provide GPS?

The main routes we use, such as the Rota Vicentina and the Via Algarviana, are officially waymarked. For self-guided walks we also provide GPS tracks for every stage along with written route notes, so you have more than one way to stay on the path. On guided walks, your guide leads the navigation.

What if I cannot finish a stage?

It happens, and it is not a problem. If you are tired, unwell or injured and cannot complete a stage, call our 24-hour line and we will arrange a transfer to your next accommodation. On a guided walk, your guide will sort it on the spot.

What support is there if something goes wrong?

Every trip has a 24-hour emergency support line, and we share the contact details in your pre-trip pack before you travel. Whether it is a wrong turn, an accommodation question, a transport hiccup or something more serious, there is a real person to call. For a genuine emergency anywhere in Portugal, the national number is 112.

Are meals included?

Breakfast is included every day. Lunches and dinners are not included as standard, which leaves you free to choose where and what you eat, and we point you to good local places along the way. If you would prefer some meals arranged for you, we can add them on request, subject to availability.

What is the accommodation like?

A mix of guesthouses, small B&Bs and rural hotels, chosen for their character, comfort and location close to the trail. They are booked on request rather than held in advance, so we confirm each one for your dates. We will always tell you where you are staying, or somewhere similar if a property is full.

What should I pack?

Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes or boots, layers for changing weather, sun protection, a daypack, a water bottle and any personal medication. For self-guided trips, your guidebook includes a full suggested kit list for the season and the route. Keep your main bag to one piece per person for the luggage transfers.

When is the best time to walk?

Spring, roughly March to May, and autumn, September to November, are ideal: mild temperatures, long light and the trails at their best. Winter is quieter and still very walkable along the coast, with cooler days and the chance of rain. We do not recommend midsummer for the longer coastal stages, when the heat is demanding.

How do I get there, and which airports?

Most trips start near Faro or Lisbon, both well served by international flights. Once we have confirmed your itinerary, we will tell you exactly where to fly to and where the trail begins. We can arrange airport transfers as an optional extra, and any transfers between walking stages are taken care of as part of your trip.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. Travel insurance is required for all our walkers, and arranging it is your responsibility. Make sure it covers walking and hiking activities, along with medical care, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation and your belongings. Our 24-hour support helps on the ground, but it does not replace insurance.

Flights are not included in the programme price, so you are free to book the route and fares that suit you. If you would like a hand with them, we are happy to help. Just ask.

How do you approach sustainability?

We keep groups small, work with local guesthouses, family-run restaurants and Portuguese suppliers, and plan routes that respect the trails and the communities along them. We are currently working towards Biosphere Sustainable certification, a GSTC-approved standard. It matters to us that walking here supports the places you walk through.

How do I book?

Start by telling us what you have in mind, through the website or by email. We check availability for your dates, send you an itinerary and a quote with everything laid out, and once you are happy, a deposit confirms the booking. Some programmes can also be booked directly on the website.

How far ahead should I book?

Accepted Answer

The sooner the better for spring and autumn, when accommodation along the trails fills quickly. As soon as your dates are set, it is worth confirming. We will always tell you honestly what is still available.

Question 28

Deposit and balance: what is the schedule?

Accepted Answer

A 30% deposit confirms your booking and lets us reserve your accommodation. The balance is due 30 days before your start date. If you book within 30 days of departure, the full amount is payable at the time of booking.

By bank transfer or by card. We include the payment details and your reference in the booking confirmation. All quotes and invoices are in euros.

What is included in the price, and what is not?

Included: your accommodation, breakfast daily, daily luggage transfers, any transfers between walking stages, and 24-hour support. Self-guided trips also include the digital guidebook and GPS tracks; guided trips include your guide. Airport transfers are usually an optional extra rather than part of the standard price, and we are glad to arrange them. Not included: flights, travel insurance, lunches and dinners unless stated, drinks beyond breakfast, personal expenses and walking gear. Every quote spells out exactly what is included for your trip.

Is there a single supplement for solo travellers?

Yes. If you would like a room to yourself, a single supplement applies, priced per trip depending on the accommodation. We show it clearly in your quote.

What are your cancellation terms?

Accepted Answer

Cancellations must be made in writing, and the date we receive your notice sets the fee. The standard schedule is:

Up to 31 days before departure: €50 administrative fee

From 30 days before departure: 40% of the total

From 24 days before departure: 50% of the total

From 17 days before departure: 60% of the total

From 10 days before departure: 80% of the total

From 3 days before departure, or no-show: 90% of the total

Some trips carry stricter terms where an accommodation has to be released earlier, and we confirm the exact conditions in your booking confirmation. Where we can, we will negotiate with suppliers to reduce the cost.

What if you have to change or cancel my trip?

Now and then, weather, trail conditions or events beyond anyone's control mean a change is needed. If that happens, we talk it through with you and offer the best alternative we can, whether that is an adjusted route or new dates. Your booking confirmation sets out how this is handled.
